Wrought iron patio furniture is furniture made by bending, shaping, and welding mild medal wrought iron.

Wrought iron itself has a long history, dating back to Roman times. There are many historical gates built with wrought iron. These include the Gates of Alexander, the Cairo Gates, the Jerusalem Gates, and the Westminster Abbey in London.  New Orleans is full of beautiful wrought iron balconies especially in the French Quarter. Even the Eiffel Tower is made of puddle iron which is a form of wrought iron which has a little more carbon giving the metal greater strength.  The 19th and early 20th centuries were the heydays of wrought iron.  As steel became cheaper and cast iron came onto the market, wrought iron production declined.  Mainline commercial factory made wrought iron came to an end in the early 1970s.  It’s now twice as expensive to produce wrought iron as it is to manufacture low carbon steel.  Today, Wrought Iron Furniture is highly crafted with very artistic ornate designs.

Wrought iron patio furniture is simply beautiful and can give your backyard a charming Victorian elegance with its detailed leaf and flower patterns.  It is often the stylish material of choice for outdoor living furniture creating a nice atmosphere conducive for hosting friends and parties.

Plastic furniture is cheap and light but it doesn’t last long.  It gets pretty weather beaten after one or two seasons.  This may be fine for some people because plastic is so disposable that they don’t mind replacing it every year or two.  If you’re not one of those people and you would rather give your backyard a more permanent stately look then wrought iron is a great way to go.  It’s also nice having patio furniture that doesn’t blow away on windy days.

Your wrought iron patio furniture can also be used inside as well.  At our home, we had a complete wrought iron table set, glider rocker, and baker’s rack as our living room furniture for many years.  It looked nice.  It didn’t come across as outdoor living furniture stuck inside.  A couple of years ago, we moved all the wrought iron to our backyard patio and it looks great there too.  So, wrought iron has great versatility.

There are so many wrought iron patio furniture items to choose from.  You can buy foundation pieces like tables, chairs, rockers, gliders, and end tables.  There are also decorative pieces such as gates, garden trellises, plant hangers, and signs. Indoors, wrought iron is often used for many decorative pieces like wine racks, baker’s racks, candle holders, curtain rods, and wall decorations.  The possibilities are endless.

So, spend a little extra time when you’re looking to decorating your patio and consider the possibilities wrought iron can bring.  It’s worth the money.

Aluminum is often a common sense choice for outdoor furniture.

Some advantages are:

a) Aluminum is relatively inexpensive.

b) Aluminum is light weight but strong.

c) Aluminum is easy to care for as long as you watch for pitting.

d) There are a plethora of aluminum furniture pieces available on the market to suit your pool, patio, or garden.

Aluminum Care

How do you treat rusting aluminum?  You don’t because aluminum doesn’t rust!   Still, aluminum is very prone to basically a non-destructive corrosion called corundum which leaves a very hard film with a white dull look.  In the long run, corundum actually protects your aluminum.

What is very destructive for aluminum is pitting which forms in small weak sections of the corundum oxidation.  Things like salt air near the beach and dust from a dessert can accumulate in spots becoming an active solution that attacks the aluminum.  Coating your aluminum furniture with silicon spray or auto wax can prevent pitting.

These guys have a nice selection of aluminum outdoor furniture:

Durability is a key issue when choosing outdoor benches.  A metal bench is a perfect choice for that.

Weather plays a big factor on the life of your outdoor furniture.  Metal outdoor benches can take the beating that sun and rain constantly deliver.  A plastic bench often fades and cracks within just a few seasons but metal can prevent sunlight and moisture degradation.  Specially coated cast aluminum can protect against rust due to exposure to Mother Nature. Wrought iron is also a great decorative option for your outdoor furniture plans.  Come rain, hail, snow, and sunshine, metal outdoor benches are a great choice in the long run.

Show me any piece of backyard patio or public park furniture and I’ll bet a kid has climbed on it.  Children are a great test for the durability of your outdoor furniture and outdoor benches are a prime example.  Plastic furniture will soon break due to the climbing up, walking on, and jumping from that children love to do but metal will withstand their weight and abuse.

Children and weather are two great reasons not to skimp and buy cheap plastic outdoor benches. Go metal for the durability.

Finally, you do not want to buy a new outdoor bench each year for your patio.  Spend a little extra one time and invest in a quality outdoor metal bench and it will last for years to come.

Teak is a hardwood mainly from Southeast Asia.  It is one of the most popular woods used for vintage outdoor furniture because of its strength, weather resistance, and being pest proof.  It’s so popular that teak is now on the endangered list due to too much foresting of it.  There are three types of teak:  Common, Dahat (from Burma), and Philippine.  This has led to plantation grown hybrid teak that is not as durable as traditional antique teak.  Know the source of the teak furniture before purchasing.

Pure teak does not rot like most other woods.  It is rich in oil and has a good measure of rubber substance.  This combination makes for a natural water repellent material great for outdoor conditions.  Thus, for centuries, teak has been the prime choice in building ships.  Untreated teak will oxidize and turn to a grey silver only with a few months of sunshine but you can coat your pieces with a color guard to help preserve its original golden brown look.  To keep the rich wood look, apply a teak oil every couple of years to rejuvenate its natural oils.    Even if you don’t do anything to it, your wood will not rot.  For your whole life, it will remain a solid strong piece of furniture.

You can clean teak with a 3 to 1 mixture of laundry detergent and chorine bleach.  Anything stronger can destroy the wood.  Scrub the solution in brushing with the grain.  Give a good rinsing after a few minutes.  Occasionally, mildew can form on your furniture.  A good product to remove mildew is called Jomax.

Teak has become a status symbol of quality outdoor patio furniture.  The major players in the teak outdoor furniture market are Kingsley Bate and Country Casual.  Like wrought iron, quality teak patio furniture requires highly skilled artistic design.

Strength, weather resilience, style, low maintenance, and longevity make teak wood a perfect choice for your outdoor patio.
